Cape Regional’s Diabetes Self-Management Education Program Awarded Continued Recognition

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – The Cape Regional Medical Center Diabetes Self-Management Education* program has been awarded continued recognition by the American Diabetes Association for Quality Self-Management Education.
Initially recognized in November, 2002, the Diabetes Self-Management Education Program at the Medical Center continues to provide high-quality education services to the patients it serves.
Self-management education is an essential component of diabetes treatment. One benefit of compliance with the National Standards is greater consistency in the quality and quantity of education offered to people with diabetes. The program participants are taught, as needed, self-care skills that allow better management of their diabetes treatment regimen.
Assuring high-quality education for patient self-care is one of the primary goals of the Education Recognition Program. Through the support of the healthcare team and increased knowledge and awareness of diabetes, the patient can assume a major part of the responsibility for his/her diabetes management. Unnecessary hospital admissions and some of the acute and chronic complications of diabetes may be prevented through self-management education.
“The Diabetes Center at Cape Regional Medical Center is the regional leader in Diabetes Self-Management and support,” stated Christopher Zitnay, M.D., Endocrinologist and Medical Director of The Diabetes Center. “The American Diabetes Association accreditation is a great way to help consumers identify a quality program, and they set the standard to quality diabetes care.”
The Diabetes Center at Cape Regional Medical Center is accredited by the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The Center conducts ADA Diabetes Self-Management Classes at various times during the day and evening throughout each month; the cost of this program is covered by most insurances. The free monthly Diabetes Support Group is also held at various times to accommodate patients’ schedules.
