COURT HOUSE – Cape Regional Medical Center has partnered with Medical Simulation Corporation (MSC) on an innovative project that focuses on the early recognition and treatment of sepsis. Due to overwhelming success, Cape Regional Medical Center has committed to extend their collaborative effort with continued study participation.
The project, in partnership with Medical Simulation Corporation, endorsed by the American Hospital Association, consists of extensive education on best practice guidelines, incorporating an online education component in conjunction with extensive hands-on simulation training. “MSC is a healthcare improvement company known for their ability to accelerate and standardize the adoption of best practices across the continuum of care. This unique method of education has resulted in a measurable knowledge gain and retention of knowledge among our healthcare providers. This educational gain translated into better outcomes, decreased acuity and a 15% mortality reduction for patients that developed this frequently occurring illness,” stated Arthur Childs, DO, FACOI and Medical Director of Critical Care.
“Cape Regional Medical Center has sustained results for greater than two years and these results ultimately translate to lives saved within the community,” added Childs. Cape Regional Medical Center’s study and their impressive results were presented at the Society for Critical Care Medicine’s 43rd Annual Critical Care Congress in San Francisco, California on Jan. 10, 2014.
“Sepsis is a severe illness caused by an overwhelming infection of the bloodstream. An infection may originate anywhere in the body and is often life-threatening when it occurs,” stated Childs. “Sepsis is currently the cause of more than 25 percent of hospital-related deaths in the United States and evidence-based, best practice guidelines have identified treatment bundles which when followed benefit patient outcomes by early identification and treatment of this devastating disease.”
