COURT HOUSE — Two local wineries won a total of 13 awards at the recent annual New Jersey Wine Competition sponsored by the Garden State Wine Growers Association.
Cape May Winery, located in Cold Spring, won nine awards.
Natali Vineyards, located in Goshen, won four awards.
According to a release, Cape May Winery won a gold rating for its 2006 Barrel Chardonnay as well as three silver awards for its 2007 Chardonnay, its Isaac Smith non vintage Port and its Cape May Red, a blend of syrah, chambourcin, cabfranc and vidal blanc.
New Jersey’s southernmost winery encompasses 15 acres.
Cape May Winery also captured five bronzes for its 2006 CabFranc, its 2006 Cape May Pinot Grigio, a 2006 Merlot, its 2007 Blue Sky Victorian White and its 2007 Cape May Riesling.
Natali Vineyards won a silver rating for its non vintage Sauvignon Blanc and three bronze ratings for its Viognier, a typically dry white wine made from a variety of grape originally grown mainly in the Rhône valley of France but now cultivated here, its non vintage Moscato, and its non vintage Merlot.
Wines from both wineries were chosen from more than 260 wines submitted for the contest by New Jersey wine growers. They were rated by wine industry experts using the 20-point University of California/ Davis system using clarity, color, bouquet,
acidity, sweetness, body, flavor, bitterness, astringency and overall quality as criteria. The judging was led by Dr. Gary Pavlis, PhD of Rutgers University, a wine and small fruit expert who has been supervising the judging for 18 years.
