Cape May County Coast Guard Community Foundation Invites County Students to Participate in ‘What the Coast Guard Means to Me’ Art Contest

CAPE MAY – The Cape May County Coast Guard Community Foundation (USCG) invites County elementary (ages 5-10) and middle school (ages 11-14) students to submit artwork for the “What the Coast Guard Means to Me” Art Contest.
This is the second year the art contest is being held as part of the Coast Guard Community Festival, taking place during Mother’s Day Weekend, Friday, May 6 through Sunday, May 8. The Festival celebrates and honors U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) personnel and their families, and the County’s relationship with the USCG.
The following are specifications for submissions:
• Two-dimensional artwork in any media is acceptable
• Maximum size: 22” x 28”
• On the back of the submission, include the artist’s name, age, full mailing address, telephone number and email address
The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 22. Winners will be announced Friday, April 29.
One winner will be selected from each age bracket, and the winning students and parents/guardians will be invited to the Festival brunch on Sunday, May 8 at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal. Winning artwork will be displayed at the brunch, and the students will be honored by the Foundation’s board and the Commanding Officer of Training Center Cape May.
Original hard-copy artwork must be submitted to Colleen Ferraro, art coordinator, Coast Guard Community Festival, and art teacher, Richard M. Teitelman School, Erma, NJ. “We’re thrilled to bring back the art contest for a second year and highlight the talents of our local students,” said Freeholder E. Marie Hayes, a Cape May County Coast Guard Community Foundation board member. “We’re looking forward to seeing a whole new group of students expressing their creativity on how they depict the rich Cape May County – Coast Guard relationship.”
Festival events on Friday and Saturday are scheduled to be held at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Cape May (“TRACEN”), 1 Munro Ave., Cape May. Friday evening will include a “Farewell to Captain Prestidge” dinner, honoring the Captain who is moving from TRACEN to a new duty station. Dinner tickets can be purchased at coastguardcommunity.org/tickets. On Saturday, walking tours of U.S. Coast Guard Ships and trolley tours of the extensive TRACEN base will be available, along with live music, a wide variety of children’s activities and interactive displays, extensive exhibits by cultural and historical groups, nonprofits and the USCG, and additional vendors. Admission to TRACEN is free; photo ID is required for access to the base.
