COURT HOUSE – Several Cape May County beaches placed in the ‘Nation’s 35 Superstar Beaches,’ a list released by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) June 25.
These beaches were recognized for consistently meeting water quality safety thresholds set by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Each of these beaches met national water quality benchmarks 98 percent of the time over the past five years.
To compile its list of top beaches, the NRDC analyzed water testing results from the EPA and state beach coordinators for almost 3,500 beaches nationwide.
The following Cape May County beaches were included in the ‘Nation’s 35 Superstar Beaches:’
– 40th St. in Avalon
– 40th St. in Sea Isle City
– 96th St. in Stone Harbor
– Webster Rd. in Upper Township
– Orchid in Wildwood Crest
No Cape May County beaches were included in the list of the ‘Nation’s 17 Repeat Offenders,’ which highlights sections of U.S. beaches which have had persistent contamination problems, with water samples failing to meet public health benchmarks more than 25 percent of the time each year from 2009 to 2013. Only one New Jersey beach was named in this list, Beachwood Beach in Ocean County.
