Cape Bank Increases Pledge to Arc of Atlantic County

CAPE MAY – If you’ve never done it, take a second to read New Jersey’s definition of “Developmental Disabilities.” The law states it’s a condition that: is attributable to a mental or physical impairment, or both; manifests before age 22; is likely to continue indefinitely; and results in substantial functional limitations in three or more of the following – self-care, receptive and expressive language, learning, mobility, self-direction, capacity for independent living and economic self-sufficiency.
As you read through the long definition, and comprehend full meaning of each of its elements, one word comes to mind. That word is “Challenging,” and that word is just fine with Patrick J. Manion, Director of Philanthropy for The Arc of Atlantic County.
During these tough economic times, raising the funds needed to support his agency and the people they serve can be quite challenging. That’s why Manion and everyone that The Arc helps were extremely grateful when The Cape Bank Charitable Foundation increased the 2014 portion of a five-year pledge from $50,000 to $100,000.
“It’s rare in today’s world to find a corporation that’s willing to step up and invest in the community the way Cape Bank does through its charitable foundation,” said Manion, who said The Cape Bank Charitable Foundation was entering the fourth year of a five-year, $225,000 pledge when it decided to double its 2014 pledge amount.
“While there were no stipulations placed on The Arc receiving this donation, Cape Bank and The Arc of Atlantic County are hopeful that this $50,000 gift will serve as a challenge to community members and businesses to contribute gifts which together match Cape Bank’s gift,” said Michael David-Wilson, Chief Executive Officer of The Arc of Atlantic County. “Our goal is to raise another $50,000 by June 30, 2014.” Those wishing to contribute toward this challenge can do so by credit card at www.arcatlantic.org or by calling 609-485-0800.
The mission of The Arc of Atlantic County is simple – to improve the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our community. They do this through a combination of direct services, advocacy, education and prevention activities.
“Structurally, we work in partnership with individuals and their families to make choices possible about how and where they live, learn, play and work,” said Manion. “Our goal and vision is to ensure all people, regardless of their challenges, have the opportunities and support they need to live the lives they choose.”
Today, there are 290 employees (171 full time) working at The Arc. While the most substantial focus of the agency continues to be residential programs, the drive is on to assist the people we serve in finding suitable employment. Through the work of the Supportive Employment staff and the Adult Training Center, the transition is underway to move away from center based services towards helping individuals find appropriate and satisfying work in the community. In the industry, this big change is called “the conversion”.
In total, approximately 166 individuals receive residential services and over 700 people participate in one of the eight programs offered through Family Support or are assisted by one of the four case managers. This year, The Arc’s annual budget is approximately $12 million.
In terms of challenging the community to support this worthwhile cause, the $100,000 donation from The Cape Bank Charitable Foundation could not come at a better time. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed March “Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.” The presidential proclamation laid the foundation for Americans to provide the “encouragement and opportunities” necessary for people with developmental disabilities to reach their potential.
