COURT HOUSE – The 2014 edition of A Guide to Accessing Cape May County’s Beaches and Surf Chairs for People with Disabilities is now available on the Cape May County Website, capemaycountygov.net, through the County Department of Tourism and Public Information and on the website of the NJ Department of Human Services/Division of Disability Services.
The Guide, introduced in 2007, has been revised for 2014 to reflect improvements in beach accessibility that have been implemented over the year by some municipalities.
This brochure, produced by the Cape May County Department of Aging and Disability Services in association with the Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Department of Tourism and Public Information, provides detailed information regarding the accessibility of beaches located in Avalon, Cape May City, Cape May Point, Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Stone Harbor, Strathmere and the Wildwoods. Also, it highlights the investment these municipalities have made in surf chairs (Ocean City alone has 54); those beach accessible wheelchairs with large, balloon-type wheels that don’t get stuck in the sand.
Additionally, the Guide contains Beach Patrol contact information, best access points to the boardwalks/promenades and to the beaches, availability and safe use of surf chairs and the processes for reserving them and location of accessible rest rooms and parking in each of communities listed in the brochure. The purpose of this vacation planning resource is to enable individuals with disabilities and their families to plan ahead for the fullest enjoyment of their time at the Jersey Cape, whether their stay includes one day or several weeks at the beach.
The 2014 electronic version of the Guide is now available on capemaycountygov.net. Print copies of the Guide are being distributed throughout Cape May County and statewide, through the efforts of the Cape May County Department of Tourism and Public Information, the New Jersey Division of Disability Services and the New Jersey Association of County Disability Services (NJ ACDS).
