Beach Portraits May Cost $50K

WILDWOOD — To help them remember their picture perfect day, beachgoers may be able to smile at the birdie as they sit on their chairs and wiggle their toes in the surf. And it won’t be the seagulls they’ll be showing their teeth to.
City Commissioners authorized the advertisement for bids that would allow photography on Wildwood’s beach, along with its neighboring city’s beach in North Wildwood, during a special meeting held Wed., March 21.
Each municipality will charge a $25,000 fee to allow photographers on their beaches, for a total contract price of $50,000. Potential bidders may opt to bid on both cities’ beaches, or just one.
“The last time we did it, it was $22,000,” said City Administrator Chris Wood. “It was a $44,000 contract.”
Special events such as soccer weekend and monster truck weekend will not be included in the contract.
“If it’s cordoned off for a special event, I don’t think they’ll have access unless they are a vendor for the event,” said Wood.
“Basically,” said Mayor Ernie Troiano, “You’re going to walk the water’s edge where people are seated. You have the right to walk the beach line.”
According to the mayor, any event permitted by the city will be off limits to the photographer.
“I would say that you are not permitted at any permitted event,” said Troiano, noting that permitted events are governed by city rules and regulations.
In addition to the contractual ban on permitted beach events, an ordinance makes the city’s Boardwalk off limits to beach photographers as well.
Bids for photography on the beach are scheduled to be advertised March 26 and April 2. All bids must be received by the city by Tue., April 10.
