Baehser Tapped as Baldrige Program Judge

By Herald Staff

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke has appointed Deborah Baehser, vice president of Patient Care Services at Cape Regional Medical Center to serve a three-year term on the panel of judges for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest honor for organizational innovation and performance excellence.
“In these difficult economic times, the Baldrige Program encourages organizations to develop world-class operations and serve customers well,” Locke stated in a release. “We’re pleased to have someone with Baehser’s knowledge and experience helping lead the effort.”
“Having the opportunity to participate in the National Malcolm Baldrige Program has provided me with the privilege to work with leading experts from manufacturing, education, service and healthcare industries across the country,” stated Baehser. “I am extremely honored to receive this appointment from the Secretary of Commerce and to serve as one of twelve judges for the National Quality Award.”
All applicants for the award are rigorously evaluated by an independent board of examiners in seven areas: leadership, strategic planning, customer focus, measurement, analysis and knowledge management, workforce focus, process management, and results.
Based on those assessments, the highest-ranking applicants are chosen for an on-site visit by a team of examiners to clarify questions and verify information in their applications.
As a judge, Baehser will be responsible for selecting which applicants receive site visits, and ultimately, which applicants are recommended to Locke as award recipients.
Baehser serves with 11 other leading experts selected from industry, professional, charitable and trade organizations, education, healthcare, and government.
Baehser brings to the panel more than 16 years of healthcare management experience, including seven years as vice president of clinical services, and three years as senior vice president of clinical service/CNO at 2004 Baldrige Award recipient Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
She also has served as a Baldrige examiner and has published numerous articles on the Baldrige Criteria and process.
