AVALON – Avalon Police Department say that they’ve seen a decrease in crime, including DUI’s, thanks to the jitney service on Seven Mile Island, according to NBC 40.
“I would say there are definitely less DUIs than last year,” Captain Jeff Christopher of the Avalon Police Department told NBC 40. “We had approximately 56 DUI’s last year and we’re down to 15 this year. It’s a big, big decrease in numbers.”
Police tell NBC 40 that they’ve also seen a decrease in bike thefts, as well as increased safety for pedestrians.
“It certainly makes the jobs on police departments much easier,” Jitney Association President, Tom Woodruff told NBC 40. “They’ve done statistical studies and in some instances, drunken driving has reduced 70 percent.”
Officials tell NBC 40 that the jitneys provide an economic benefit to Avalon and to Seven Mile Island.
This is the second summer that the Seven Mile Island has offered this service.
