Finally a ray of sunshine in a cool and wet month of May as the Avalon Lions Club held its monthly meeting and dinner. For dessert, not one, but two checks to Lazarus House and Habitat for Humanity.
The Avalon Lions are preparing for a busy summer season of fundraising to donate to a growing list of charities in Cape May County. The club will hold its annual Pancake Breakfast at the Community Hall at 30th Street and Avalon Ave. on June 11 between 8 and 11 a.m. Later in June, the Lions will hold their 8th annual Charity Golf Classic on June 26 at the Avalon Golf Club with proceeds benefiting the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children.
But this month the Lions donated a check for $5,500 to Lazarus House, the food pantry located in Wildwood. Last year the all volunteer lifeline served nearly 19,000 people who can not afford to feed themselves or their families without help.
Habitat for Humanity received a check for $3,000 to help put a roof over the heads of needy families in Cape May County. Thanks to dozens of carpenters, plumbers and electricians, and an army of other volunteers, the organization builds homes and then sells them to families who qualify. Their motto: Giving a hand up, not a handout.
The Avalon Lions Club helps support more than a dozen local charities in Cape May County and is one of the largest 401(c)3 foundations in New Jersey. We Serve.
