COURT HOUSE — With trendsetting care and a commitment to the community, Atlantic Eye Center has made its mark in Cape May County for more than two decades. Now the business, and its founder, have been recognized by the Middle Township Chamber of Commerce as 2010 “Business of the Year” in the category of healthcare and senior services.
These top honors were awarded at the Middle Township Chamber of Commerce meeting in March.
Atlantic Eye Center was nominated in the category of Healthcare and Senior Services. Chamber members voted for businesses and individuals within the community that stood out for their innovative business practices and contribution to the community. “It’s a great honor to be recognized by my peers in this way,” said Dr. Michael J. Caruso, founder of Atlantic Eye Center. “There are a lot of quality businesses in Middle Township and we’re proud to be counted among them.”
Atlantic Eye Center first opened in Cape May Court House in 1988 as a full-service ophthalmology and optometry practice offering patient-focused eye care for children, adults and seniors. Caruso assembled a team of eye care professionals to deliver state-of-the-art care to protect vision for a lifetime. The practice soon expanded to an office in Linwood.
About that same time, Caruso—always at the forefront of ophthalmology—became the first doctor in Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties to perform Lasik surgery. The revolutionary blade-free procedure corrects vision in a matter of minutes. In 2000, after thousands of successful surgeries, he opened the EyeMax Lasik Center in Linwood to deliver that same progressive treatment to his patients.
In 2003, Caruso opened the Cape Cataract Center to focus on another part of the business, the successful treatment of aging eyes. An estimated 20.5 million Americans over 40 have cataracts, and the number of Americans undergoing cataract surgery is expected to increase as that statistic grows to an anticipated 30.1 million this year.
The Cape Cataract Center is a freestanding Ambulatory Surgery Center offering the most advanced cataract surgery available, without stitches, patches or needles and results the same day.
Caruso is a board-certified medical ophthalmologist and eye surgeon. He works with a team of eye care specialists. These include ophthalmologists Dr. Robert Miller and Dr. Jim Huang, and New Jersey licensed opticians Lenny Calvert and Brad Miller.
