MAYS LANDING — Atlantic City Electric (ACE) recognized approximately 100 employees during its recent Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast held at the Buena Vista Country Club. The annual event honors company employees who make a difference in their respective communities through volunteerism. Pete Higbee of Absecon and Jules Zaccone of Laurel Springs were named the Atlantic City Electric 2014 Volunteers of the Year.
“Our commitment to the community is very important,” said Vince Maione, Atlantic City Electric region president. “We are thrilled so many of our employees participate in events and volunteer initiatives each year to support numerous organizations in the communities we live and work.”
On behalf of Higbee and Zaccone, Atlantic City Electric will donate $500 to each of two charities the honorees choose.
Higbee, a 31-year employee and substation work leader with Atlantic City Electric, was recognized as the city of Absecon’s 2014 Volunteer of the Year. He is chairman of the Absecon Parks and Playgrounds Committee and coach and commissioner of Absecon Youth Basketball. A long-time coach with the Absecon Social and Athletic Club, he has been a driving force behind the Cape Atlantic Junior Boys Basketball League’s Marsh Madness Basketball Tournament for the past 34 years.
“I enjoy giving back and helping young people at the same time,” Higbee said. He is a member of Absecon Little League Baseball, president and treasurer of the Cape Atlantic Junior Basketball League and co-chair of IBEW Local 210’s Community Assistance Fund Golf Tournament.
Zaccone, senior supervising engineer and 30-year employee with Atlantic City Electric, is a member of the Knights of Columbus organization at his local church. He has coached in the Gloucester Township Boys Basketball League for the past 10 years and is coordinator of the league’s senior division for 15 to 18-year-olds. He participates in numerous Atlantic City Electric volunteer efforts including the Clean Ocean Action beach sweeps in Atlantic City, Special Olympics beach volleyball tournaments and company initiated back to school and holiday food drives, among others.
“It’s most rewarding to help make a difference in someone’s life through volunteerism. This is especially true when young people I’ve coached in the past call me years later and ask to be a volunteer in our basketball league.” Zaccone’s family and colleagues say he has inspired them to get more involved in serving their communities.
Atlantic City Electric’s Volunteer Initiative Program encourages employee participation in community volunteer activities. Each year, dozens of ACE employees donate tens of thousands of hours of their personal time to help support local organizations, community events and volunteer initiatives.
