Atlantic City Electric and Petra Solar Launch Solar Project in County

By Herald Staff

MAYS LANDING – Atlantic City Electric and Petra Solar announced they have teamed up to launch a demonstration project featuring solar photovoltaic (PV) systems mounted on utility poles in Cape May Point and Ocean City. Petra Solar’s SunWave™ intelligent, pole-mounted photovoltaic solar systems are being installed by the end of April.
“Through this demonstration project, we are exploring the alternative power source offered by SunWave™,” said Atlantic City Electric Region President Vince Maione. “We are committed to delivering reliable and affordable electricity to our customers, and through this effort, we will test a new approach that offers great promise for sustainable, clean energy production.”
Dr. Shihab Kuran, CEO and President of Petra Solar, added, “Not only will our solar PV system provide power to Atlantic City Electric’s customers, it also will enhance the power grid. Our SunWave™ systems turn utility poles into solar generators and they also communicate with the electric grid and offer smart grid capabilities. The systems can improve grid reliability through real-time communications between solar generators in the field and the utility control center. In addition, our systems enhance electric distribution grid reliability to help stabilize the grid during periods of increased load.”
This month, five systems will be installed on Sunset Boulevard in Cape May Point and another five on 35th and Simpson streets in Ocean City. They will enable Atlantic City Electric to evaluate SunWave™ capabilities in solar power generation and smart grid communications.
Petra Solar, based in South Plainfield, NJ, is the pioneer of grid-tied, pole-mounted, distributed solar generation systems. SunWave™ combines solar energy with smart grid communications and electric grid enhancement functions.
