Atlantic Cape Community College’s Cape May County Campus is celebrating five years of service this fall.
Since opening its doors in August 2005, CMCC has significantly enhanced educational opportunities for Cape May County residents with a $15 million facility, impeccable amenities, and small classes for more individual instruction.
The three-story, nearly 68,000 square-foot building is located adjacent to the 4-H fairgrounds on a 29-acre site on Court House-South Dennis Road in Middle Township.
Virtually 30 percent of all graduating high school seniors from Cape May County schools enroll in courses at the campus, which provides students with small classes for one-on-one instruction; an information commons — a comprehensive library with nearly 9,000 books and 30 computer stations; a 100-seat lecture hall; chemistry and biology labs; bookstore; counseling, testing, and tutoring services; a conference room with teleconferencing capabilities; and more.
Prior to the opening of CMCC, students attended classes through Atlantic Cape at Middle Township High School, at a small extension center in Rio Grande, or at rented facilities in the county.
Cape May was the only county in New Jersey that did not have its own or a shared community college, which presented an inconvenience to those who wanted to pursue higher education. Now, county residents can earn degrees in liberal arts or general studies entirely at the campus, or earn credits toward one of Atlantic Cape’s 45 degree programs.
Since 2005, CMCC has experienced a 27 percent growth in fall semester credit enrollment and has provided customized training to more than 40 area businesses while playing host to more than 100 public and private events.
Later this year, Atlantic Cape will house the largest solar array in Cape May County after Pepco Energy Services Inc. installs carport solar arrays at the campus parking lot.
Atlantic Cape invites local residents to Community Day, a celebration of the anniversary of the Cape May County Campus, 2-6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13, at CMCC, 341 Court House-South Dennis Road, in Cape May Court House.
Friends of Atlantic Cape can continue the 5th anniversary celebration at the 2010 Scramble ‘Fore’ Scholarships golf tournament and awards dinner, Friday, Oct. 15, at the Cape May National Golf Club and the Chalfonte Hotel. This dinner serves as the capstone event of CMCC’s week-long celebration and raises money for student scholarships.
