The North Pole moved a bit south this holiday season. More than a hundred members of the Avalon Lions Club, their spouses and friends made Santa’s workshop look calm by comparison. Only a few days before Christmas, the Avalon Yacht Club hosted a gala evening for Toys for Tots on Thursday night, Dec. 17.
The night was spent in usual Lions Club fashion with plenty of good food, holiday music and warm friendship. Since the annual holiday dinner began more than a decade ago, the event has been paid for by club members so that charitable funds would not be used.
Following dinner, a dessert of generosity and giving was on the menu accompanied by background holiday music, caroling and dozens of toys spread under the tree.
Each guest was encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy for children in Cape May County, and Santa’s elves could take a few lessons from their response.
In addition to a boatload of toys, the Lions presented a check for $ 2,000 to David Burton, United States Marine Reserves for use in its annual fund drive.
The Avalon Lions Club Charitable Foundation is one of the largest and most active 501 (c) 3 charitable corporations in New Jersey. The Club supports 16 charities in Cape May County.
