For the 19th year in a row, the Atlantic & Cape May Counties Association of School Business Officials Joint Insurance Fund (ACCASBO JIF) celebrated member school district successes at their Annual State of the Joint Insurance Fund Dinner meeting. The dinner meeting is organized each year to focus on, reward and recognize the extraordinary efforts of member districts in their commitment to provide a safe and healthy environment for students, staff and community through by actively participating in various internal and external risk management programs.
Rewards were earned by members who reduced the number of accidents they had by focusing on local safety efforts, utilizing ACCASBO JIF safety services, building and maintaining responsive internal accident reporting and investigation systems and by being committed to doing the right thing for everyone impacted by any and all accidents they did have. It is hard work and member districts were acknowledged with recognition plaques and monetary awards. In all seventeen (17) member school districts were recognized and received awards totaling of $47,250. Two districts, Estell Manor School District and Folsom Borough School District, were recognized as School Districts of the Year as each went above and beyond the call of duty and both earned an additional $2,500 reward. Individual awards were presented to three persons whose contributions and selfless acts in their respective districts had far reaching and significant positive impact within their district and served to elevate the communities they are a part of. Nancy Wanner, School Nurse at Estell Manor School District; Edward Ostroff, Director of Buildings and Grounds at Jackson School District; and Debra Skwisz, Secretary to the Business Administrator at Somers Point Schools were each honored by being recognized as “Safety Stars of the Year”.
The ACCASBO JIF is a public entity that is owned and controlled by its Member Districts; is not an insurance company, and is monitored by the NJ State Department of Banking & Insurance. The State of New Jersey allows public entities to collectively pool their resources to insure for property, various liabilities and workers’ compensation coverages. ACCASBO JIF was formed in 1991 to reduce the cost of risk so that more money would be available for educational purpose. Over the years since, member districts have saved tens of millions of dollars over the premiums they once paid and successfully generated surplus funds of $12,315,864, of which, they have returned $4,914,908 back to themselves in the form of dividends for textbooks, supplies, technology, new programs, and tax relief. Every cent the ACCASBO JIF members successfully retain through safety and risk management efforts in each budget year is surplus they own and will be returned to member school districts with interest over time.
