CAPE MAY POINT STATE PARK– A bright light in the sky attracted a steady stream of the curious into the park after the official closing hour Sat., Aug 14.
The bright light was Fort Mott’s 1942 Sperry 60-inch Anti-Aircraft Searchlight. It made an appearance in honor of World War II Day in the state park. The search light is rated at 800 million candlepower.
The light, which burns carbon and is powered by a generator, was illuminated following a lecture from Robert Henley from Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities entitled “Cape May in World War ll.
The curious made their way to a walkway to the beach, closest to the World War II Bunker. Some said they saw the light in the sky from the bridge entering Cape May.
