Bike Auction Finds New Homes for Over 60 Abandoned and Unclaimed Bikes

By Press Release

SEA ISLE CITY – On July 19, Sea Isle City’s Purchasing Department hosted a municipal bicycle auction that found new homes for over 60 unclaimed and abandoned bikes. Each of the bicycles on the auction block, ranging from children’s bikes with training wheels to adult mountain bikes, had been sitting in storage inside the Sea Isle City Public Safety Building – some for over a year. After the required six-month retention period, any bike that was deemed abandoned or unclaimed by the Sea Isle City Police Department was put up for sale during the auction, which took place in the police department’s west parking lot.
During the bike-sale, Sea Isle City Mayor Leonard Desiderio, who served as the event’s auctioneer, sold each bicycle to the highest bidder. With over 100 buyers in attendance, some bikes sold for as little as $3.00 while others fetched up to $85.00.
According to Sea Isle City Purchasing Agent Carmela Desiderio, who organized the auction with Assistant Purchasing Agent Vicki Pittaluga, the event netted over $1100 for the municipality’s coffers. “Every bike we had sold, and there were many happy buyers after the auction,” she said.
Sea Isle City has hosted numerous bike auctions in recent years, however this was the municipality’s first auction since 2009. The City also sells un-needed items on www.govdeals.com, including office equipment, computers and other valuable merchandise.
