CAPE MAY AIRPORT — Local resident Mark Holtzapfel came across some very unique 2’ high assorted red letters during a demolition project in Wildwood, NJ this past Dec. Realizing they may have some value, he donated the sign letters from the old Wildwood Casino Arcade to Naval Air Station Wildwood (NASW) Aviation Museum.
Over the last few weeks, Museum Board Member Thomas Camp, along with Museum Maintenance Director Bob Moser have been putting finishing touches on restoration efforts of the letters. Where the original purpose of the sign is no longer existent, a little elbow grease and creativity have given new life to the old “Wildwood Casino” sign. Using almost all of the original letters from the sign, it is now fully rewired, clean and lit again but now reads “NAS WILDWOOD.” Bob Moser realized that the letters could be rearranged to benefit the museum.
It’s a wonderful and most appreciated addition to the museum’s décor. With new LED bulbs the old sign has renewed life and shines brightly below the American Flag the in the heart of the museum for all guests to see and enjoy.
Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is located in Historic Hangar #1 at the Cape May Airport. The airport was once Naval Air Station Wildwood, which served as a World War II dive-bomber training center. The museum is dedicated to the 42 airmen who perished while training at Naval Air Station Wildwood between 1943 and 1945. The museum is currently open Monday-Friday 9-4 and will be open daily 9-5 starting April 1, 2017.
