AVALON – The Borough of Avalon welcomed thousands of visitors to the Dune Drive downtown district on Nov. 23 with its very popular “Festive Friday” event. All events are free and open to the public and continue until 5:00 p.m. before Avalon holds its annual tree lighting ceremony at Veterans Plaza, 21st Street and Dune Drive. Santa Claus will make his first appearance in Avalon as he arrives on an Avalon Volunteer Fire Department fire truck and assists Mayor Martin Pagliughi with lighting the Avalon holiday tree.
Avalon’s popular skating rink opened for business shortly after 10:00 a.m. on Friday with children and their parents lacing up real ice skates to skate on a synthetic rink. At 11:00am, downtown Avalon was bustling with holiday shoppers and children taking in various activities including face paintings, a photo booth, bounce houses, live music, storytelling, balloon animals and other activities.
The Festive Friday event is presented by the Borough of Avalon and by the 7 Mile Business Community Association. Throughout the day donations are being accepted by the annual “Toys for Tots” toy drive. At the Avalon Tree Lighting event, the American Red Cross will accept cash donations to assist New Jersey victims of Hurricane Sandy.
