AVALON – The Borough of Avalon will be kicking off its season with a host of activities May 6 and 7 in the Borough. The weekend includes a wine and spirits festival presented by the Avalon Chamber of Commerce, the Avalon Garden Club’s annual community yard sale, and other community activities.
May 6 the Avalon Chamber of Commerce begins the weekend with its annual Wine and Spirits Festival being held at Avalon Community Hall at 30th Street and the beach. Over 200 wines and flavored vodkas will be available to sample, and there will be a silent auction featuring items from the island’s top businesses. The festival begins at 6:30 p.m.; ticket information is available at www.visitavalonnj.com.
May 7, there are a slew of events throughout the Borough of Avalon including the 22nd Annual Borough-Wide Yard Sale sponsored by the Avalon Garden Club. Visitors can drive throughout the community to find the best yard sale items available between the hours of 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.; the event will be held rain or shine. All participants will have a sign in their front yard. Copies of the yard sale map will be available at Avalon Community Hall starting at 8:30 a.m. One of the largest yard sales will occur at the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for the Blind. Starting at 9:00 a.m., the Avalon Department of Public Works hosts Avalon’s annual Community Paper Shredding Day. Residents and property owners may visit the 15th Street entrance to drop off their unwanted documents which will be shredded by Guardian Document Shredding Company of Mount Holly, NJ. The documents will be shredded on site and taken to a recycling facility. The event is a free service to residents and property owners.
The Avalon Volunteer Fire Department also joins in the fun with two major events at the fire house at 31st Street and Dune Drive. The department will be holding its annual Plant Sale from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in front of the fire house. Inside, fire fighters will be holding their annual Hoagie Sale from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
The Avalon Police Department caps off the day May 7 with its annual Bicycle Auction which will be held at the Avalon Department of Public Works at Noon. Confiscated and abandoned bicycles from the 2015 season will be auctioned off in as-is condition by the police department; the auction will include other items including kayaks and video cameras. Proceeds will support various public safety efforts in the Borough of Avalon.
