AVALON – The Avalon Historical Society is planning its annual “Olde House Tour” on Saturday, June 18 from 1 to 4 pm. Six houses plus the Helen Diller Vacation Home for the Blind will be featured.
One of these houses is a Victorian gothic-style dating back to around 1890. The owner of the house took half of his third floor attic to make a play area for his grandchildren while keeping with the old Avalon theme, having paintings on the walls depicting a train engine, a lighthouse, the past Peermont Hotel, and the Leaming Farmhouse.
A second house built around 1907 shows exposed walls and beams throughout the original house. Other homes on the tour date back to 1911, 1920, 1930, and 1950. The Diller Home was built around 1940 when it was a hotel and apartments.
This is the eighth year the Society is offering the tour of some of Avalon’s finest architectural gems. In so doing, they hope to raise the consciousness of others in preserving these lovely homes that are so much a part of the island’s history.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the event. They may be purchased at the History Center: 215 39th Street.
Jean Losch Memorial Race:
The Historical Society is also planning its annual Jean Losch Memorial Race the morning preceding the Olde House Tour (Saturday, June 18). Registration for the bike, kayak, and run is from 7 to 8 am, at the History Center. The race start time is 8:15 am. All participants will receive a t-shirt.
