AVALON — The Avalon Free Public Library (AFPL) has been recognized as one of the nation’s top libraries for the sixth time since 2009 by Library Journal. The LJ Index of Public Library Service, featured in its November 2013 edition, listed the Avalon Library with the 5-star rating, along with New Jersey libraries, Bernardsville and Mercer County in Lawrenceville. Others in the state receiving designation included Ocean City Free Public (4 stars), and Somerset County Library and Princeton Public Library, each with 3 stars.
The LJ Index of Public Library Services reviews data collected from local libraries annually by state library agencies and reported by the federal institute of Museum and Library Services. The data reviewed includes four per capita output measures that indicate public service through visits, circulation, Internet computer use, and program attendance. Director Norman Gluckman commented on the 5-star rating by saying “our success in serving Avalon patrons is a result of hard work by the staff and the library board, as well as a productive collaboration between the library, the school district, the Friends of the Library, the Avalon Historical Society, the Mayor’s office, and the Public Works and Recreation Departments.”
