AVALON – With a rich history dating over 70 years, Avalon Civic Club, Inc. continued its tradition this year of fostering civic responsibility by assisting in the beautification, cleanliness, health, and spirit of the community.
Through its fundraising events and programs, the Club contributed nearly $5,000 to local charities this year, an increase of over one third from 2010. Among county recipients: local food pantries of Holy Redeemer, St. Casimir, and United Way; Avalon Rescue Squad; Cape May County Division of Youth and Family Services; veterans; an area needy family; Operation Bedding; Cape Regional Hospital; Coalition Against Rape and Abuse; Holocaust Foundation; and Marine Mammal Stranding Center.
In addition, maintains the Avalon Beach Chair Program. Known as the “Surf Chair,” these large-wheeled vehicles enable the handicapped to get onto and enjoy Avalon’s beaches. Avalon Civic Club was the first to beautify the borough’s islands on Dune Drive and the 21st Street Circle, propose Memorial Day services, and in 1971, started the glass recycling campaign.
As always, Avalon Civic Club welcomes new members. Membership is a great way to meet “like-minded” residents sharing a love of community and one need not be a resident of Avalon. Most monthly meetings are held at Avalon Community Hall at 12:30 p.m. on the fourth Monday of the month from April through October. A short business meeting precedes a special program and refreshments. Special events include luncheons and card parties.
