AVALON — The Borough of Avalon captured the 1st Annual Mayor’s Cup Bocce Tournament held Oct. 17, in Avalon at the 39th Street Park. Avalon defeated Stone Harbor in a best out of three competition by the scores of 11-5 and 11-6 to win the series, 2-0. Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi and Stone Harbor Mayor Suzanne Walters played in the tournament, and were their respective team captains.
“This was a fun way to bring both communities together for a competition that has a long history in Avalon”, Mayor Pagliughi said. “We thank our friends from Stone Harbor for participating this year, and we look forward to expanding the tournament to include more communities in years to come”.
The idea of having an annual Mayor’s Cup Tournament came from Avalon Recreation Director Chuck McDonnell. Two new bocce courts were part of a 39th Street Park complex constructed in Avalon courtesy of funding from the Cape May County Open Space Program. The two new bocce courts are named in the memory of Bob Matt who made countless contributions to the Borough of Avalon.
Team Avalon consisted of Mayor Pagliughi, Doris Fox, Miriam Quarterman, and Chuck McDonnell. Team Stone Harbor included Mayor Walters, Pat Begley, Joann Mandia, and Connie Dillon.
The event was sponsored by the Borough of Avalon, the Avalon History Center, the Avalon Chamber of Commerce, and the 7 Mile Business and Community Association. Avalon will have its name inscribed on the cup and will keep the trophy until October, 2016 when it will be up for grabs in the next tournament.
