AVALON – Atlantic City Electric in partnership with the Cape May County Office of Emergency Management, will hold an Emergency Preparedness Conference June 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Avalon Community Center, 3001 Avalon Avenue, Avalon N.J. National Hurricane Preparedness Week 2016 runs May 15 through May 21.
The public is encouraged to attend this annual event to learn more about the resources that are available before, during and after a storm and to better understand ways to prepare for hurricane season which begins June 1 and runs through Nov. 30.
Andrew Sykes, manager, Emergency Management, Atlantic City Electric, will provide an overview of how Atlantic City Electric prepares for extreme weather events, offer details on the company’s restoration process and priorities, and discuss ways the company communicates to its customers during a storm.
Martin L. Pagliughi, director, Cape May County Office of Emergency Management, will discuss emergency management partnerships, the role of critical support agencies and how each agency’s emergency personnel are critical in assisting with a disaster or emergency situation.
Dan Skeldon, Press of Atlantic City meteorologist, will provide an outlook on the projected active 2016 hurricane season and discuss lessons learned from previous storms including Hurricanes Irene and Sandy.
Dr. Shari Silverman, president of the Garden State Animal Resource Team’s (GSART) Executive Board and founder of ReadyPetsGo.com, will provide residents with information on GSART initiatives and available resources to help keep pets safe in the event of a large scale weather event or other disaster.
The American Red Cross Southern Shore Chapter and Salvation Army will provide attendees information on available resources offered through these organizations in times of need, and explain how residents can better prepare for hurricane season.
Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the Cape May County Office of Emergency Management’s Mobile Command Center vehicle and learn how it’s utilized during a weather event or emergency situation.
