COURT HOUSE – Atlantic Cape Community College will host Cape May County Freeholder Marie Hayes, who will discuss sexual assault, 11 a.m., Mon., Feb. 20, at the Cape May County Campus, located at 341 Court House – South Dennis Road in Cape May Court House. The public is invited to attend this informative talk.
According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, one in five women and one in 71 men in the United States will be raped at some point in their lives; and in eight out of 10 cases, the victim knows the attacker. In addition, the center states that one in five women and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted while in college; and more than 90 percent of sexual assault victims on college campuses do not report the assault.
Hayes, a retired captain of detectives in the Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Investigations unit of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, will discuss this prevalent crime by defining sexual assault, describing prevention strategies and sharing community resources for sexual assault victims.
Hayes previously served as an adjunct instructor of Criminal Justice at Atlantic Cape Community College where she also earned her associate degree. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Services from Thomas Edison State University and graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
