AVALON – American Legion Post #331 (Stone Harbor/Avalon) presented Certificates of Participation to five students at the Avalon Elementary School who participated in an art contest to promote Americanism. The certificates were presented to the students on Dec. 6 at the school.
“Promoting Americanism is one of the many important objectives of the American Legion around our country”, said Post Commander Kevin Coyle. “These students produced very creative and patriotic art work that showcases their American pride and spirit”.
Eighth grade students who are members of the National Honor Society at the Avalon Elementary School participated in the program. They received assistance from Mrs. Patti Fottrell, society moderator and Mrs. Jackie Farina, art teacher. The students who participated in the program were Shannon Boyle, Anika Buchanan, Matthew Metzler, Holly Schall, and Emily Wannen.
American Legion Post #331 is located at the Tatham’s Life Saving Station in Stone Harbor. The station is the oldest existing building in the Borough and is the home to the Stephen C. Ludlam American Legion Post #331. The post is named in the memory of Stephen C. Ludlam who was killed in action at the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. For his heroic action in defeating a German machine gun and saving his comrades, Private Ludlam received the Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Cross, our nation’s second highest honor.
