Age & Breast Cancer

By Sponsored Content

As most of us know, all women are at risk for breast cancer, however this risk increases significantly as you age. The two most common risks are age and being a female. Therefore, elderly women need to be increasingly aware of the signs and symptoms.
Some alarming statistics exist today that include the following: there is a 1 in 8 chance that a woman in her 80’s will be diagnosed with breast cancer, that most breast cancers and breast cancer deaths (about 80%) occur in women over the age of 50, and that the average age a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer is about 62.
This may be due to the fact that as we get older, it becomes more likely that abnormal changes will take place in our cells. When many of these changes occur within the cells, cancer can develop.
So what we need to remember is that no matter what your age, you should always be aware of how your breasts normally look and feel. If you notice any changes, see your health care provider immediately.
Here at Genesis HealthCare, the staff are fully trained and prepared to help those with a recent diagnosis or even a recurrent case of breast cancer rehabilitate and be comfortable during their treatment.
If you or a loved one would like more information on our rehabilitation, please contact Denise Raymond at 602-7193. Denise will be able to provide you with updated information including signs and symptoms as well as referring you to other community sources that may be able to assist you.
