COURT HOUSE — March 12, Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) celebrated twelve years of “neighbors caring for neighbors” in Cape May County. This is truly a tremendous feat: for twelve years, the community has provided enough volunteers, to include doctors, willing to generously donate their time (typically their “day off”) to provide care to their neighbors in need. For twelve years, individuals, local groups, churches and businesses have donated sufficient funds to keep the doors open and the bills paid. For twelve years, Cape Regional Medical Center has provided a rent free building. For twelve years, approximately 4,000 people didn’t have to worry about the expense of health care.
Making the day extra special was a surprise birthday gift. The seven young dancers of Jersey Cape Dance & Gymnastics Academy presented VIM with a check for $525 at the West Cape May Board of Commission Meeting that evening. It seems back in the fall, the girls wanted to do more than just march in a parade. The dancers had a concept of a big box of gifts that would give back to their community. They asked Mayor Kaithern to recommend an area charity. Then they went out and asked the community to support their cause. Their big box concept was a resounding success. VIM Executive Director, Jackie Meiluta said “in my position, I frequently attend check presentations but never before has it been so touching. The values and charisma of these little ladies is truly awe inspiring.”
Mayor Kaithern and the West Cape May Board afforded the dancers and VIM the opportunity to speak at the meeting. Coach Stina Smith later said “it really made a difference for the girls to hear where the money was going to be spent.”
