“4-H connects kids to Rutgers,” explains County Agent Julie Karavan. “By offering engaging, free after school programs for all ages, we hope to encourage kids to explore some of the exciting work being done by scientists at the University in the areas of marine science and ocean exploration.”
Karavan also hopes to see 4-H community clubs develop in Ocean City. Since joining the faculty at RCE last June, Karavan has observed that most of the established 4-H programs in Cape May County serve communities close to the county seat. “We have an obligation to serve residents throughout Cape May County, including our barrier island communities. I am thankful to the Ocean City Library for welcoming us, and look forward to developing more opportunities to serve youth in Ocean City.”
The 4-H Youth Development Program serves young people kindergarten age through one year out of high school. 4-H programs include school and after school clubs, camps, workshops, short- term special interest clubs and regional and national trips and special events. 4-H clubs are typically led by trained, adult volunteer leaders. 4-H clubs offer youth the opportunity to explore an area of interest while developing public speaking skills, record keeping experience, performing community service and receiving recognition for their efforts and achievements.
Currently, Cape May County offers clubs in project areas such as teen leadership, cooking, LEGO, livestock projects, sewing, gardening and equine science. For more information on the many other 4-H opportunities for youth in Cape May County, attend the 4-H Open House scheduled for Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lockwood 4-H Youth Center, located on the 4-H Fairgrounds at 355 Court House – S. Dennis Road in Cape May Court House. For additional information and member registration forms, contact the 4-H office at Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County, (609) 465-5115 ext. 605.
