The Cape May County 4-H Foundation, Inc. is honored to host a ceremony once again for the proper disposal of American flags at this year’s fair. The solemn event will take place Friday, July 20 at 4 p.m. at the Carol and Ralph Porch 4-H Fair Stage. All veterans and interested community members are invited to attend.
The event came to the 4-H Fair in 2016 at the suggestion of veteran and Cape May County employee Larry Mealey. His department has coordinated official flag retirements for the county for some time, and he thought that more people would be interested in attending the moving ceremony at the fair.
According to guidelines established by the National Flag Foundation, one flag is selected to be burned during the ceremony as representative of all flags being retired. The rest of the flags are later incinerated. The ceremony includes a color guard, patriotic readings, an explanation of the meaning of the different parts of the flag and the playing of the National Anthem.
