NORTH CAPE MAY – Cardboard Box City is a homeless awareness event focused on educating youth on the realities of homelessness and sharing how Family Promise of Cape May County serves homeless families in the community, while also raising funds for Family Promise to help families in this type of crisis.
Cardboard Box City is an afternoon, evening and overnight “camp out style” event where participants bring and design a cardboard box to sleep in overnight, braving the elements and remembering homeless children and their families. The second annual Cardboard Box City will be held at the Lighthouse Church, 1248 Rt. 9 S., Cape May Court House on Friday, April 27.
“Cardboard Box City is a rewarding, exciting and fun event. People become aware of the homeless population that surrounds them and the many ways that all of us can serve our neighbors in need,” says Director Laurie Johnson. “Participating in this event helps make this growth happen.” Laurie Johnson encourages families, clubs, youth groups, boy scouts, girl scouts, middle and high school students, college students, sport teams, community organizations and businesses to join the event.
There are contests for the best box creations, the most money raised and the best slogan created. Dinner will consist of a soup line, plus there will be music and an outdoor movie will be provided. For more information and to register to participate, go to FamilyPromiseCMC.org or call (609) 846-7862 to schedule time to pick up a packet.
Family Promise of Cape May County was established in May 2009. It is a program designed to help families who are experiencing homelessness. It is a non-traditional sheltering program that only accepts families with children. A network of faith-based organizations and over 1,000 volunteers provide temporary housing and meals for up to four families at a time.
