17th Annual National Adoption Month Observed in Cape May County

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE — November is recognized as National Adoption Awareness Month, a time when states, counties, public and private organizations, and individuals celebrate adoption as a positive way to build families.  Adoption Week started in Massachusetts in 1979 and was expanded to Adoption Month in 1990.  Observances such as recognition dinners, public awareness and recruitment campaigns, and special events spotlight the needs of children who need permanent families.
Cape May County Surrogate M. Susan Sheppard, in conjunction with the Family Division of the Superior Court of the State of New Jersey participated in Adoption Day. This year the Court oversaw the adoption of 9 children.  Surrogate Sheppard said, “Adoptions are conducted all year long in Cape May County and they are always filled with much joy, happiness and love. While all adoption-related issues are important, the particular focus of this month is the adoption of children currently in foster care”.
National Adoption Day, traditionally a Saturday, is observed in courthouses across the nation as thousands of adoptions are finalized simultaneously. National Adoption day is held each year to raise awareness of the plight of children in Foster Care. http://www.nationaladoptionday.org
In 2015, approximately 4,000 youth were adopted nationwide by their forever families during the National Adoption Day celebration.
“Of special note, this year a Great Grandmother adopted her Great Grandson.  Another young girl who was in Foster Care, carried a sign that read, after 1285 days she was officially adopted”, Sheppard added.
