TOWN BANK – The 10th Annual Coombs/Douglass Memorial Bay Run was held Saturday August 6, 2011 in Lower Township.
This five mile race and two mile health run/walk was held in memory of two Town Bank volunteer firemen. Robert Coombs, a family man, was killed in an automobile accident and David C Douglass, Sr., a Lower Township police officer, was killed while protecting his community.
The event attracted both the permanent residents of the community and the seasonal.
Much work went into preparing for the event by the Town Bank Fire Department before the runners even arrived. The Fire Department was in charge of feeding the hungry runners and they did so with pancakes, eggs, sausage and other breakfast items. Along with breakfast, there were free t- shirts, door prizes and trophies.
The US Coast Guard Company Juliet-185 showed up as a united group and ran after the other runners began their race.
The Lower Township Police Department assisted with traffic control and community relations. Present also was Lower Township Rescue with an ambulance on standby in case of emergency.
There were many trophies and awards handed out in various categories. The proceeds benefit Douglass Memorial Scholarship Fund and Special Olympics of South Jersey.
