Cape May Point Launches Climate Institute and Summer Climate Summit

Lara Croushore is the director of the new institute, which invites the public to participate in research, events, and more.

From the Cape May Point Arts & Science Center

The Cape May Point Arts and Science Center is proud to announce the launch of its Climate Institute, a hub dedicated to advancing research, education, and solutions for coastal climate impacts. To lead the effort, the Center has appointed Lara Croushore as Director of the Climate Institute. Lara is an expert in the field—she developed climate policy for New York City as Chief Strategy Officer in the Mayor’s Office; she served as Managing Director of an ocean-climate policy think tank called Urban Ocean Lab; and is currently Head of Climate at SecondMuse, a global impact and innovation company. The Climate Institute at Cape May Point Arts and Science Center will foster actionable and equitable solutions to address the urgent impacts of climate change on our community and coastal areas.

Introducing the Climate Institute

The Climate Institute focuses on supporting coastal communities impacted by climate change, emphasizing the critical role our ocean and coastal ecosystems play in our climate system—absorbing heat, storing carbon, sustaining biodiversity, and protecting coastal communities against rising seas and storms. With a “living lab” approach, the Climate Institute will promote public education and awareness, scientific research, and the collaborative development of solutions for the Cape Island region.

Inaugural Climate Summit: A Call to Action This summer, the Climate Institute will host its inaugural Climate Summit, an inclusive event for scientists, researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and the public. The summit will occur on June 20th-22nd.

Event Highlights:

  • Presentations exploring the latest climate science and research.
  • Solutions Showcase highlighting climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
  • Networking & Community Building to exchange ideas and co-create actionable solutions.

The Climate Institute is currently accepting proposals for presentations and speakers. Partnerships and sponsorships are also welcome to support the event. Room & board will be available at the science center, ensuring an immersive and engaging experience. Contact climate@cmpscience.org to learn more.

Partnership with Columbia University The Climate Summit will also feature findings from a Columbia University capstone project, which provided the center with a comprehensive roadmap for sustainability improvements. Recommendations include investing in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and strategies for reducing the environmental impact of the Center.
