Three-Day Event Set for May 30–June 1 – Registration Still Open

The Cape May Point Arts and Science Center is proud to host its second annual Marine Science Symposium from May 30 to June 1, 2025. With registration still open, this three-day event invites students, professionals, and the broader community to engage in meaningful conversations centered around the health of our oceans.

The Symposium provides a dynamic platform for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and marine science professionals across the Mid-Atlantic region to present original research, exchange ideas, and build collaborative connections. The weekend will feature keynote speakers, student presentations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities—all against the backdrop of Cape May’s coastal ecosystems.

This year’s lineup includes 23 student poster and oral presentations, with participants ranging from high school to PhD-level researchers. In addition, four professional scientists will present research on marine mammals, marine debris, and citizen science in fisheries.

Keynote speakers include:

● Dr. Sean Burcher, Science Director at the Center and Senior R&D Scientist at Cellular Tracking Technologies, will present “A Deep Dive into Marine Telemetry Technology.”

● Dr. Michael Denk, DVM, of the Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center and Guest Investigator at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will share insights on beaked whales in “Of All Divers, Thou Hast Dived the Deepest.”

● Michael “Salty” Fogg, acoustic telemetry expert from Stony Brook University, will explore fisheries tracking in “But Where Have All the Fish Gone?”

“Every day in marine science is different,” said Melissa Laurino, CMPASC’s Marine Science Advisor. “Our oceans connect us all, and I’m excited to continue expanding research and engaging the Cape May community in marine conservation.”

Students are encouraged to attend, with discounted registration available to support accessibility for aspiring marine professionals.

The Marine Science Symposium is one of several impactful events hosted by the Center. Special thanks to Patricia Valas, a major sponsor helping make this event possible!

Coming up next: the 2025 Climate Summit: Local Action, Global Impact (June 20–22). For details and registration, visit capemaypointsciencecenter.org.
