BRITTON,
JOAL HEADMAN
Joal Headman Britton died peacefully on Saturday, January 18, 2025. She was a beautiful, vibrant person. Joal's presence would make any occasion a joyous one. She was passionate about her family, her friends, Murphy, her dog, entertaining and the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox.
Married for 56 years to Jim Britton in 1968, they spent their married years in New Hampshire, New Jersey and North Carolina. Travel brought them to many places in the US, Europe and Asia. Jim and Joal retired to North Carolina and maintained a home in Cape May Court House, NJ, where they now have made their final home.
Daughter of Joseph and Alice Headman, Joal grew up in Palmyra, NJ with her twin brothers, Joseph “Jay” and Michael W. She is a graduate of William Patterson College with a degree in Speech Therapy and was employed by the public school system in Burlington County. Following her marriage to Jim, they moved to NH and she soon started a job with the Methuen School System in MA. Moving back to NJ, Joal enrolled at William Patterson College and received an MS Degree in Special Education.
Joal found her real passion as a Learning Consultant on the Child Study Team at Rumson-Fairhaven High School. Here she evaluated students, with other team members, to determine if they had a learning disability. As part of the team, Joal developed an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) to provide necessary support services. Joal had a special ability to connect with high school students that assisted her in developing a personal and very supportive relationship with each of her students, helping them with all aspects of their lives. Being a Learning Consultant was her calling, which brought great joy for her endeavors in helping students achieve success and confidence in their abilities to succeed in life.
Joal is survived by her brothers, Joseph “Jay”, Michael, and her husband Jim with many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Our Lady of the Angels Church at 35 East Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House, NJ on Friday, January 24. A Viewing is at 10 AM and a Mass to follow at 11 AM. A reception to follow at the Lobster House in Cape May.
