AVALON – As work continues on Bay Park Marina, the marina itself and the boat ramp are open to the public. The project had been delayed by emergency bridge work by Cape May County on the Avalon Boulevard entrance to the island, which prevented much needed heavy equipment from being brought to the site.
All work was suspended for the holiday weekend and then resumed. As work continues, boat slip owners are able to put their boats in the water. Work on the new bulkhead has been completed.
Avalon’s contractor, Schiavone Construction, managed to bring a crane to the site by barge to circumvent the temporary ban on heavy equipment on Avalon Boulevard.
Schiavone is waiting for an OK from the county to bring heavy equipment onto the island for the scheduled back-passing project aimed at sand transfer from mid-borough beaches to eroded areas of the north end.
The work on Boulevard bridges was more limiting than it otherwise would have been due to weight constraints on the 96th Street bridge in Stone Harbor.
A new, movable span bridge is not expected to be ready for use until at least 2028. That leaves the Avalon Boulevard entrance to Seven Mile Island as the only avenue for heavy equipment.
