AVALON – The borough has been invited to join the national board of directors for the American Coastal Coalition, a nonprofit founded in 1996 to advocate for the unique needs of coastal communities.

Mayor John McCorristin said Feb. 25 that the borough’s representative on the Coastal Coalition board will be Business Administrator Scott Wahl.

McCorristin said he hopes the nonprofit can work to increase grants and push for legislative initiatives that address the needs of coastal communities like Avalon.

The mayor said Wahl will bring his voice and considerable experience to crucial discussions of sea level rise, climate change, coastal erosion and beach replenishment, and environmental conservation.

Councilman Sam Wierman said Feb. that the invitation to join the Coastal Coalition board gives Avalon “a seat at the table” with respect to issues of importance to the borough and to similar communities across the United States.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, more than 40% of the U. S. population lives in the 10% of land that forms the American coastline.
