AVALON – Avalon Fire Department used wave runners to help rescue two boaters after their sailboat ran aground in Townsend’s Inlet during a thunderstorm.

According to information published by NJ.com, first responders were called to Townsend’s Inlet at approximately 2:30 p.m., July 18, after receiving a report of a 30-foot boat in distress in the shallow water.

The published NJ.com article said the boat was pitching violently in the rough surf as a thunderstorm reached the area, bringing high winds and lightning.

The article quoted Avalon Fire Chief Ed Dean as saying the department launched a fire boat and two wave runners because it was near low tide in the inlet.

The crews from the wave runners helped anchor the boat and then transported the owner and his passenger to the fire boat. No injuries were reported and the sailboat was towed to a safe location.
