AVALON – Business Administrator Scott Wahl told Borough Council May 28 that the state Department of Environmental Protection was very close to approving the municipality’s application for a townwide dredging permit. Wahl said it might even happen before the council’s June 11 meeting.
A townwide dredging permit would be a unique arrangement between the municipality and the DEP, the only one of its kind in the state.
The townwide permit would allow dredging without the lengthy and expensive process of obtaining permits each time. It would also allow homeowners to use the permit when they need their private slips dredged.
The borough began the process by approving a feasibility study by Mott MacDonald in August 2021, which came the heels of two emergency dredging projects. The last major back-bay dredging project undertaken by the borough was in 2014.
