To our Readers: To promote further transparency at the county government level and encourage residents to listen in on the meetings of the Cape May County Board of County Commissioners, the Herald will be posting the audio recordings of those meetings as soon as possible after they conclude, with the target being posting within 24 hours.
The recordings are normally not available to the public for at least two weeks after a meeting. The Herald believes they should be available almost immediately; a handful of other South Jersey counties and Cape May County towns already do this.
The Herald, in its recent “Open Government” series that focused on transparency by elected officials at the county and municipal levels, pointed out that Cape May County ranked lowest among South Jersey’s counties in the number of ways officials made their meetings more easily accessible to residents.
In Cape May County, Commissioner Will Morey has repeatedly called on his fellow commissioners to take steps to ease that access, with no success to date.
