AVALON – Avalon Borough Council, Sept. 13, agreed to participate in an Atlantic City Electric program for the replacement of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) units at the borough’s community hall and police station.

Through participation in the program, Avalon benefits with a 77.6% savings on the installations, saving taxpayers $545,049 and resulting in a borough expenditure of $157,244 or only one-third of the budget allocation for the project.

The implementation of the Small Business Direct Install (SBDI) program is through the Camden County Education Services Commission Cooperative Pricing System in which Avalon is a participant.

Mayor John McCorristin said, “This program pays for the majority of the project, including installation and labor, while permitting the installation of the units on a faster timetable than the traditional process.”

The SBDI program is approved through the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and is funded through the Societal Benefits Surcharge that is a part of everyone’s electric bill. At the council meeting, Business Administrator Scott Wahl said that Avalon was the first municipality in the county to take advantage of the program.
