America is an enchanting place. If you question that statement, believing that it was true yesterday but no longer the case, ask yourself, why do we still have large numbers of immigrants coming to our shores? I read recently that prosperous Germany wishes it could attract three times as many immigrants as it currently receives in order to maintain their economy. Population decline is a problem for most of Europe. The same is true for Cape May County.
The ongoing question is, how do we sustain our prosperity? I ask this in light of the upcoming presidential election. Contrary to what Hillary Clinton said in her presidential-aspiration announcement about taking from the rich, we need to select a leader who understands what has made America strong. Without that understanding we are likely to decline.

Cape May County needs more money for our greater prosperity and to
reverse the population decline – real estate offers us a proven opportunity.

Clinton pointed to the super rich and told us how she would work to get some of it from them and share it with us. There are a couple of fallacies with this.
One, if she believes there is something structurally wrong with our economic system, what is it, and how specifically is she going to work to change it? The fact is, she doesn’t have the answer to that. Rather, it is the same vague promise that many politicians have held out to voters for the last half century, and have totally failed to deliver, despite the fortunes in tax dollars dumped down that drain.
Two, it doesn’t give us a concrete task to sink our teeth into. People earn money when they offer goods and services that others desire to pay them for. The more valuable the service, the greater the compensation. To be able to offer such a service, people have to be educated or trained. We can’t sit there like a bump on a log and expect it to come our way. A leader needs to point others toward a vision that people buy into, and for which they are willing to work hard to achieve.
Getting the right national leader is one thing, but we also must do what we can do to reverse the decline here in Cape May County. We have been given one of the most beautiful places on earth to live, so much so that people come here by the millions to visit.
Yes, Cape May County needs more money for our greater prosperity and to reverse the population decline, but getting government to force it has not proven to be a sustainable answer. We need to earn it. People who come spend billions here, and a lot of that is on real estate. The building and maintenance of these properties creates employment for large numbers of people. What can we do to attract more of them? This is a question for business people, environmentalists and our government to answer. We cannot sit still; to do so dims our present circumstances and undermines our future prospects.
