To the Editor:
One of our countries neglected days of remembrance is Flag Day. With Memorial Day behind us and the Fourth of July weeks away, it seems as though we forget this “unsung” day. Is it because we don’t get a day off from school or work? Or is it simply because it lies between two holidays?
I have witnessed on several occasions between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the pomp and circumstance surrounding the flag lowering ceremonies at Sunset Beach in Cape May Point. And each time I watch the ceremonial folding of “Old Glory” and hear the taps being played I get a lump in my throat whether or not I know the person being remembered. The meticulous folding of our flag takes on a special meaning when you understand that:
• The first fold is symbolic of life.
• The second denotes the belief of eternal life.
• The third is in honor of all veterans.
• The fourth fold represents our trust in God, in times of war and peace.
• The fifth is tribute to our country – remembering the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our country right or wrong – but our country.
• The sixth is emblematic of our pledge of allegiance.
• The seventh pays tribute to our Armed Forces as they protect us from all our enemies foreign and domestic.
• The eighth pays homage that we may, with God’s help, see the light of day.
• The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood and all mothers.
• The tenth recognizes fathers and their influence on their children.
• The eleventh represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and Solomon.
• The twelfth fold represents the emblem of eternity and glories in the Holy Trinity.
• The thirteenth and final fold, with the stars facing up, reminds all of us of our nation’s motto – “In God We Trust.”
When the flag is completely folded and tucked, it takes on the appearance of a tricorn hat – always reminding us of the soldiers and sailors who served under Gen. George Washington and Captain John Paul Jones who helped provide us with the rights, privileges and freedom we enjoy today.
Whenever you pay your respects on a patriotic holiday; be it Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, the Fourth of July or during the nationwide “Wreaths Across America” ceremony held in December; remember the 13 folds in our flag and their symbolism to pay homage to friends or loved ones.
